A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
